So what exactly is uploading and downloading? It's the transfer of files or folders from an external storage device to your computer or vise versa. Here's a more in depth look at it what it really is and how it works.
You can dowload from an external storage device such as a memory card from your camera, flash drive, external drive, or even from the internet. It simply means that you are saving the file or folder to your computer from an external storage location.
You can download a single file or a whole package of files such as a complete program or hundreds of pictures that are stored inside a folder.
Let's just say that you want to download a picture that you have saved on your flash drive ( also known as a thumb drive). First you would insert the flash drive into one of your computers USB ports. After that you can navigate to "My Computer" and select your external storage device as seen below.
In the example above, my flash drive is showing up as "Bobby" but thats only becasue I named it that. Your flash drive will show up as something other than your name unless you rename it. It shouldn't be hard to find though.
Once you have double clicked it, a list of the files or folders that you have stored on the flash drive will appear. Choose which file or folder you want to download. Now it's time to download.
In this example you would download the item to your desktop which means the file will be taken from the flash drive and saved on your computers desktop.
One way to download a file is to drag and drop it. Hold your cursor over the file and then hold down your left click button. Now drag the file over to your computers desktop and release the left click button.
The file will now be downloaded and saved to your desktop. You don't have to save it to your desktop though. You could save it to your documents folder or any other given folder on your computer.
The second way to do this is to copy and paste the file or folder. Now let's say that you have a folder saved on your flash drive that contains 200 files and you want to download the folder to your desktop. First you would right click on the folder thats on your flash drive and select "copy".
Now hover your cursor over your desktop, right click, and select "paste".
The folder and all of the files stored inside of it would then be downloaded to your desktop. You could remove your flash drive and the folder would still be available to you on your desktop at any given time.
Keep in mind that the above methods of downloading is not limited to just picture files. They can be used to download any file or folder.
Honestly uploading a file or folder is very similar to downloading. Uploading simply mean that you are saving a file or folder from your personal computer to an external storage device. You can drag and drop the item from your computer to the external storage device or you can copy and paste it just as described above.
So all together what is uploading and downloading?!
